An Introduction to Golf – It’s Not Just For Retirees

People used to believe that golf was a sport for the old, white, and retired. In fact, many would scoff that it’s hardly a sport at all. This conception could not be farther from the truth. When super-player (in more ways than one apparently) Tiger Woods burst onto the golf scene, he immediately caught the public’s eye: he was young, he was of mixed-race heritage, and he was committed to physically training himself, which drastically improved his game. He may be having some marital problems, but that doesn’t change the fact that Tiger Woods showed the world that anyone can benefit from playing golf.

An Introduction to Golf – It's Not Just For RetireesOne of the reasons that golfers are so enthusiastic about their sport is that it’s so challenging. Some people might get frustrated by how difficult it can appear at first. But with a little patience and some good coaching, you will see a steady improvement in your game. And the second you see a visible improvement, you’ll be hooked. It can be addicting to chart your progress; to see how much farther you can drive a ball after you spend some time focusing on strength training; to see how improving your form can also improve your game.

When getting started with golf, you’re going to want to get some clubs to practice with. Since you’re just starting out, there’s no sense in spending a ton of money on clubs. At this point in your game, you won’t even really know the difference between a great club and a mediocre one, and you certainly won’t know which club fits your style and your game better. It might be a good idea to invest in a used set of golf clubs. You’re bound to get them cheaper that way. And you can find them at garage sales or online at sites like eBay or Craigslist for a great price.

When it comes to learning the game, you can either spend money on joining a golf academy or even hiring a golf pro to help you learn. You will most likely learn faster this way, especially if you get lots of one-on-one attention. But this kind of training can be very expensive and may not be practical for the casual golfer. But you can also pick up tips from your golfing buddies or even by watching online tutorials and practicing at the driving range. You can even improve your short game by playing mini-golf. Golf is a fun way to get good, moderate exercise.
