Fun Family Fitness – The Importance of Doing It Together

America ranks as one of the most overweight countries in the world. Not only is adult obesity rampant, but childhood obesity is also at an all time high. In order to battle this epidemic of poor health habits, it’s necessary to band together in order to fight for good health. An easy unit to form into a fighting team is a family. If the parents decide to make healthy eating habits and exercise a part of the family, then the entire family will benefit from this newfound discipline. And not only because of the physical benefits of diet and exercise, but also because of the time they spend together.

Fun Family Fitness – The Importance of Doing It TogetherYou should first discuss this issue with your spouse. It will be extremely difficult to enforce a fitness mandate on your children if you or your spouse undermines it with your own lifestyle. Make sure that you and your spouse agree on how you will implement these changes to your family’s lifestyle. Formulate a plan and stick to it. Make sure that this plan covers diet and exercise. And don’t be ashamed to start small. You can’t expect an entire family to go from living a sedentary lifestyle to training for a triathlon immediately. Implement small changes first and then gradually take on bigger ones.

When you announce your fitness mandate to your children, do it together. Make sure that your children understand that this is for their health, fitness, and future. And emphasize that it’s also for the sake of spending time together as a family. They may complain and whine at first, but they’ll get used to it. And after they get used to it, they may even learn to enjoy it. Dealing with this issue is also a great opportunity to strengthen your marriage and your family bond.

The changes can be small, at first. Limit how much television your kids watch and when they watch it. It’s a shame to waste good daylight indoors. And make sure that you stick to this rule, too. You shouldn’t be indoors watching TV while your kids are sullenly sitting on the porch because you made them go outside. Go out with them and engage them in physical activity. Play games with them; chase them around. You can also organize family outings: go on a walk to the park or a bike ride to the beach. There are many fun, family-friendly ways to make exercise a part of your life as a family.
