Since the government passed laws making it mandatory for food manufacturers to put nutrition labels on their products, we have felt safer and more “in the know” about what we are eating. We can now pick up anything in the grocery store and look at how many calories, carbohydrates, vitamins, and grams of fat and protein it has. We can also find out about the sodium and fiber content of the food item. Great, now we can plan our meals to a healthier lifestyle because we know for sure what we are putting into our bodies. Or do we?

Recently, a website called Walletpop.com did a study and found out that only 3 out of 4 food items in the grocery stores actually has the correct nutritional information listed! This means that 1 out of every 4 items that you buy regularly does not have the right information printed. This is clearly outside of the laws that were passed a few years ago. Walletpop.com did not just make assumptions on this either; these results were based on actual lab tests, the findings of food experts and government reports. This is not good news for all of the dieters out there – all this time you thought you were buying food that was low in calories or low in sodium, and meanwhile, the food labels were tricking you!

These findings are not exactly just based on recent tests either; these studies have been going on for a few years now, so all of this time, we have been fooled into thinking that we know what we are eating and that every food manufacturer has been abiding by the law, when in fact, they haven’t. What I don’t understand is how they can print inaccurate information when there are people with severe allergies and sensitivities to certain things and when obesity is on the rise in this country. They are certainly not helping the problem by making these kinds of mistakes.

Another thing the study found was that the government has almost no insight as to what the manufacturers are putting on their labels. Each company basically is its own police when it comes to this law. Many people think that their should be a lot more control with this issue, and that if the government went as far as making the law, they should at least make sure that it is being followed.

Unfortunately, the mistakes on the labels were not for little things like the percentage of vitamins; they were about how much sugar, fat and calories there were in the foods, which makes people suspicious that these were not actually mistakes. More people are health conscious these days, and sales of certain foods would go down if the correct nutritional information was posted on everything. However, a law is a law. Our laws are put into place to protect people, and they are not meant to be broken.

Calorie intake is something that most people have a problem with. Much of the time we pay more attention to what kinds of foods we are eating, and less attention towards how many calories we are consuming every day. No matter how many different diets and gimmicks you try though, the best way to lose weight is to reduce your calorie intake (while eating healthier of course!) and increase the amount of calories burned. The best way to do this is to up your daily exercise and cut back on calories.

There are a couple of ways to do decrease the amount of calories that your body consumes each day: one is to watch your portion sizes, and weigh and measure every item of food that goes into your body every day. This is very time consuming, and unless you have not much else to do every day, it takes up too much time to be a realistic solution. Another way to cut back calories is to take a diet supplement that suppresses your appetite. This method is fairly successful, but it can end up squeezing your bank account dry very quickly. Many people simply don’t have the extra cash flow to spend $20 to $60 dollars on every bottle of suppressant pills – especially when they would have to spend this much money one to 3 times per month! We need a better solution, and it has to be easier, less time consuming, and above all, cheaper.

Kathleen Melanson, a nutrition professor at the University of Rhode Island, also thought there should be a better way, and she studied the effects that chewing gum had on calorie intake. Her findings will be very encouraging to every person out there who is trying to lose weight – no matter how much or how little you need to lose. The study she did on the subject was only a short term one, but since her findings were successful, she will be conducting another long term study to make sure the effects she found last through the long term.

Basically, Melanson took 2 groups of people and monitored their calorie intake and their energy levels. The first group did not chew gum at all. The second group chewed sugar free gum for 20 minutes, 3 times a day. The gum chewers ate fewer calories with each meal, and also did not consume as much food as they would have normally. She also noticed that the gum chewing group had more energy, especially after chewing the gum. Melanson said that the brain equates the chewing with eating, and because of this, your brain will not send out hunger signals when you have chewed some gum. You will get full faster and will not be as hungry. Also, because of the energy burst that chewing gum gives, your metabolism may be affected positively.

Sugar free gum costs are significantly less than any appetite suppressing supplements out there, and even less than a food scale. You can find packs of gum almost anywhere for about fifty or sixty cents or you can buy a pack of 5 or 6 packs of gum for around $2 – much more affordable, and anyone can buy them!

There aren’t too many diets out there that most people would consider fun or enjoyable to be on. In fact, the majority of the population seems to have a very Garfield like mentality when it comes to dieting, which is understandable, since dieting usually saps us of our energy, heightens our cravings and makes us irritable to everything and everyone around us. No wonder we hate dieting! For that matter, our families and friends probably hate it when we diet too…

Diets have become a great way to make a buck in this country, especially because we are known as the fattest country in the world – literally. There are more overweight and obese people in America than in any other country out there, and companies and individuals are taking advantage of that, which is why there are way too many diets and diet products available on the market today. There are all sorts of scams out there and unfortunately, people are spending their money left and right on every new thing that comes out because most of us don’t want to have to work hard to lose the weight; we want a miracle cure, and we want it to happen quickly!

The latest fad diet right now is a strange one. The Hollywood Cookie Diet is the most unique diet yet, and it is exactly what the name implies. On this diet, you have to buy special packages of cookies, and they come in 3 flavors: chocolate chip, lemon and oatmeal. And yes, there are real chocolate chips in the chocolate chip flavored cookies, not ex lax! The cookies are advertised to be loaded with fiber and protein, but when reading the nutrition information, they didn’t appear to have really high amounts of these.

The Hollywood Cookie Diet meal plan is very simple. Basically, you are to substitute breakfast, lunch and all of your daily snacks with 4 cookies per day and then you are supposed to eat a light supper – and that’s it! It doesn’t seem like much, but apparently the cookies are filling and they come individually wrapped so it is easy to take them to work. However, I don’t know how you are supposed to explain it to your coworkers when they see that all you are having for lunch every day is a cookie!

Boxes of these cookies cost around twenty dollars for a package of 12 cookies. That is pretty expensive, considering you would have to pay that amount every 3 days. If you only had a few pounds to lose it might be more worth it, but if you have a significant amount of weight that you want to get rid of then I wouldn’t recommend giving this diet a try. They advertise that as long as you stick to the “meal plan,” you will lose up to 15 pounds a month. Actually, it is possible to lose up to 15 pounds in a month jut by exercising regularly and eating right. 4 cookies a day – even if they are diet cookies does not constitute eating right! I don’t think I would recommend this diet to anyone, because as soon as you go back to regular meals and snacks you will most likely gain the weight back.

How many times have you lost weight, only to have it creep back up again? It makes you feel so dejected; all that hard work, gone down the drain. You felt so good about yourself and proud of the fact that you did it – you lost the weight, and now here it is, staring you in the face again. It usually seems to happen right before an even where you will see people you haven’t seen in years – just to top your frustration off with some feelings of embarrassment and inferiority! Life is wonderful…

There are some things that you can do to make sure you maintain that great new figure, and never go back to the “old you” again. In other words, you can throw out your fat pants! You won’t be needing them again. A recent study has proven that your environment more to do with losing and keeping off weight than even willpower and motivation. These findings surprised some and confirmed what other people were already thinking. Most of the researchers, however, were surprised to see just how much your environment has to do with whether or not you lose weight and keep it off.

The first thing to look for when improving your home environment is how many TVs you have. The more televisions, the less your chances are for maintaining your weight loss. Try only having one or two TVs in the house. Put one in your bedroom and one in the living room or in your basement. The more rooms in your house that have TVs, the less likely you are to exercise in those rooms. The TV doesn’t exactly inspire much movement does it? It makes you want to sit on the couch and eat.

The next thing you can do is lay out some exercise equipment around the house. Put a treadmill in one room, and some weights in another. If you have an exercise room and put all of your equipment in that one room, chances are you will be avoiding that room at al costs! Instead, disperse your fitness equipment in rooms where you know you will be often when you are home.

Another thing the study found was that if you left it up to willpower and motivation alone, you aren’t likely to succeed. When it comes to willpower, don’t give yourself a chance to have to use it. Just don’t have unhealthy foods in your house at all, and you won’t be tempted to eat them! When it comes to motivation, it is not enough to get you to exercise. In addition to strategically placing your exercise things, you can also make appointments with a friend to go for walks or runs or hit the gym. Choose a friend who has been supportive throughout your weight loss journey, and who can keep you accountable.

The last thing you can do to maintain your weight loss is to watch your mindset. Don’t view your dieting as a one time thing; it should be a lifestyle change. If you go back to your old way of eating and living, you will not likely keep the weight off very long.

I am sure that you all know by now the importance of eating fish. Everyone has heard that eating fish twice a week will help you to lose weight, and that fish are healthy, healthy, healthy! (Just wanted to drill that into you one more time in case you haven’t heard it enough yet!) You may have thought that we have found out everything there is to know about fish, and that we have discovered all of the health benefits of eating fish by now. Well, as it turns out, you would be wrong if you had figured those things.

Scientists recently conducted a study on the oils found in fish and what they can do for us. It turns out that there are a lot more benefits to eating fish, and it may even be used to medicate, prevent or even cure certain illnesses and diseases in the future. It will take a few more studies and a lot more research before we know anything for sure though. What we do know, however, is very encouraging.

Researchers took fish oil and found an ingredient in it called Resolvin D2. They also found that this key ingredient can reduce inflammation. This sounds simple enough, but the type of inflammation that the fish oil reduces is also the type that leads to a number of different diseases.

One confirmed ailment that Resolvin D2 significantly helps, is arthritis. Scientists have know that fish oil can help arthritis for a while, but until this study, they did not know the extent that it helped. Even just a small amount of this ingredient will bring about a large positive change in symptoms, and will be a great relief to arthritis sufferers.

Researchers also looked into another ingredient found in fish oil – DHA, and they found that our bodies actually convert DHA into Resolvin D2, giving the body even more of this powerful ingredient. These results were very encouraging to the researchers, and will also be very encouraging to many people out there who suffer from the diseases that the Resolvin D2 will help alleviate.

Researchers did not give any information as to how much or how little fish you should eat to reap the maximum benefits of the ingredient Resolvin D2, and they did not release the information about which diseases it could help or even possibly cure, so I would recommend continuing to eat it between 2 and 4 times a week. Everything in life is better in moderation, even fish! Now, if you are able to get fish that you know for sure does not have any mercury in it, I would say you can go right ahead and eat it as many times a week as you want. Unfortunately, it is hard to get fish today that doesn’t have mercury, and if you eat this fish too often, you could be at risk of symptoms and diseases that can be brought on by too much mercury.

Being a Mom is one of the hardest jobs in the world. Some people say that the job gets easier over time, as our kids grow up, but I think it just becomes different, not easier! We face many different dilemmas as we raise our kids, and most of the time, no matter what we choose to do, whether it be types of punishment, yes or no answers, or how to answer our kids’ questions, our choices usually lead to feeling guilty, even if we made the right choices! Guilt is a well known feeling for mothers everywhere unfortunately, and society does not make things any easier on us!

One of the choices in motherhood that seems to be the toughest on us is the decision of what to do after maternity leave is over. Should we stay at home with our kids or should we go to work? If we choose to be a stay at home mom, society deems us as not good enough to be in the workforce – especially those career-minded, driven ladies who end up as CEO or vice president of their companies. Stay at home mothers always end up knowing at least one of these women, and absolutely hate getting the inevitable question: “So what are you doing these days?” Of course, the reaction when they hear that you are a stay at home mother is always the same: “Oh!” which is accompanied by the raised eyebrow and a comment like, “Well, I wish I could sit around all day with my kids, but you know me – workaholic!” (I’m not sure what gave these women the idea that taking care of kids, husband and house is not work!)

However, most working mothers feel just as guilty about working, as stay at home mothers feel about not working. If you choose to go back to work after having your baby, or if you have not been left with a choice in the matter, and you have to leave your child with somebody else for most of the day, it can be a heart wrenching and gut wrenching thing to do as a mother. It may get easier over time as our kids grow up, but the feeling of guilt never really goes away. The verdict? Being a mother is hard, and no matter which road you choose to take, you will feel guilty over your choice! It doesn’t have to be like that though, and we need to change our mindsets on the matter.

Our choices are just that – choices. If you choose to stay at home with your kids, then quit thinking about how you should be out there working, and really be at home with your children. They don’t want to see you pining around the house, wishing you were out there working; instead, show them a confident and happy mother who is content with the choice that she has made. Show them that it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks, as long as you know you’ve made the right choice.

In the same way, if you have chosen to work, or if not working is not an option for you, don’t foster that feeling of guilt – throw it out with the trash! You are working to provide more for your children and their future. Instead of feeling guilty over not spending every minute with them, make the most of the time you do get to spend with them and let them know how much they are loved.

What do you see when you look at the space around you? Are you dissatisfied with your surroundings? You may be thinking about changing some of the scenery around your home. If you are thinking about landscaping, there are a few things to consider before you get started. Too many people rush into their landscaping projects and make snap decisions that they later regret, so I am writing this article to discuss what to do before you start landscaping your property. I will also give some important tips that should help you with your project decisions.

The first and most important thing to do is to plan your project. Some people find it helpful to make sketches of the changes they want to make, while others like to clip descriptive pictures from magazines and newspapers to assist in their decision. Once you have decided what it is that you want to do to your yard, you can then move on to the next step in the landscaping process, which is to check the flow of the ground’s water. All of the water coming from the ground should be flowing away from your house. The ground that your house has been built on should be a little higher than the ground in your yard. It is important not to interrupt the water’s flow, so make sure that your landscaping project “goes with the flow!”

The next thing you should do is take a good, long look at your yard because in some cases, landscaping isn’t the best plan. If the space around your home is already in excellent shape, then changing it or adding to it could actually ruin the look of your yard. Remember, landscaping is much more than just laying some stone work and planting a few flowers; landscaping is an art, so think carefully about the decisions you are making.

Now that you have an idea of what you want to do, and now that you have thought carefully about whether or not your yard needs changing, it is time for the next step. It is time to remember the people that share the yard with you. Ask yourself, “How do they use this space? How much room do their usual activities need?” You need to consider these questions – especially if you have small children! Plan your project around your family’s activities, and let them be involved in the process. This way you can share with them the importance of what you are doing, and you can also have some family fun.

If your landscaping project involves plants, you need to consider how much work you want to be doing in the years to come. Before you purchase any plants, check to see if they are annual or perennial. Annul plants only last for one year, so many people prefer planting perennial flowers because these will continue to bloom for years. Another thing to consider is the amount of upkeep your plants will require. Some need a lot of TLC, while other plants only require the occasional weeding and watering. Again, it all comes back to how much work you are willing do, so you need to decide how committed you are to your landscaping project.

Landscaping can be a fun hobby for many people, as long as it is done carefully. Remember, they key is to have a plan.

Sometimes, when mothers get to a certain stage in their lives, where their kids are grown or almost grown, we don’t really know what our role is anymore. We aren’t done mothering yet, and we haven’t reached the “friends with our children” stage, so we just fall back on the familiar territory of us being the mother and them being the children who still need us for everything.

This attitude can be damaging to the mother/child relationship however, and there are valid reasons for that! From the time they were born they have needed you for many things, everything at times! Now, they haven’t really reached total independence from you, but they certainly don’t need you as much as they used to either. This stage is hard on parents, particularly mothers, but we need to learn to readjust to this new mothering situation, instead of trying to pull our kids back into the familiar.

I want you to take a moment and look at your child. I mean, really look at him or her. Sometimes we can see them as still 6 or 10, when they are 18 or 22, and this can be a source of frustration to them! Look at your child as you would a stranger at that age. What do you see? Chances are, they are confident, competent and can do a lot more by themselves than we like to think. This is the time when we as mothers need to learn to step back – not a huge step, mind you, but a step nonetheless – and let our kids start to live their own lives. This is a scary concept to us, because we want to protect our kids and keep them from making the same mistakes that we made. Well, guess what? There is not way to keep them from their own mistakes. Think about it – would you be where you are today had it not been from some of those mistakes and what they taught you about life?

Another issue mothers and grown children have at this stage is the advice problem. I am sure you know what I am talking about: you see a problem your child is having, and your first response is to give your wise advice. However, instead of them looking to you as the ultimate solution to their problems like they used to, they are now irritated by your advice and say things like, “If I wanted your advice, I would have asked for it Mom!” What happened? Well, what happened is that your child is grown up now and desperately wants to figure things out on their own, but he still needs and wants his mother to talk to. Except he doesn’t want you to respond – just to listen! If you truly want to give your advice, sometimes the only way to do it is to keep it to yourself. When they want it (which they WILL, never fear!) then they will come to you and ask you for it.

This process is a hard one for most parents, but the important thing to remember is that your role as a mother never stays the same; it is constantly changing and evolving, and you need to learn to change with it! Learn to let go and watch them grow up and be more independent. You know the saying, “If you love something, set it free and if it is yours it will come back?” Well, your children are yours – they always will be, and if you let them go, they will always come back! Letting them go is the healthiest and best way to keep them close.

Parenting has never been easy; it has always presented challenges from the beginning of time, and it will continue to present challenges until the end of time. Some of these problems are the same for everybody, and some parents find themselves faced with very unique hardships. No matter where you live, how old your kids are or what difficulties you have, one thing that faces every parent, is what type of kids their children are hanging out with. There are many different types of families out there, and everyone has different standards on how they raise their kids, so how do you keep tabs on your kids and what kind of friends they are hanging out with without being too overbearing?

One of the things that parenting experts say is not important when it comes to raising your kids, is popularity. Raising them right is much more important than being the “favorite” parent. This is excellent advice. However, when it comes to keeping an eye on your kids and their friends, popularity can come in very handy! This is not to say that you should let your kids do anything and hang out with anyone just so they will want to hang out around you and you can watch what they’re doing! There are other, less compromising ways to doing this.

Remember when you were a kid and hanging out at your friends’ houses was always more fun than your own house? There was probably one family in particular where all of the kids congregated, because their house was the most fun home to be in. this is the type of environment you need to create in your house. When you make your home the friendliest, and the most fun, all of your kids’ friends will want to hang out there, instead of anywhere else where you won’t be able to keep an eye on them.

Sometimes, to do this you don’t even have to change your home, or house rules. If your kids are still small, you can set up (or have fun building) the biggest, best and most fun backyard play set in the whole neighborhood. If it’s your teenagers that you are most worried about, try renovating a space in the basement into a rec room full of fun for teens. You could add a pool table, gaming system, foosball, and whatever else your teenagers are into.

Of course, you also need to make sure that other parents are comfortable having their kids at your house, so without telling them what you are doing (they could get offended at the thought that you may not trust their kids as goof influences on yours!) invite the parents over every now and again, and let them know that they are always welcome to drop by when their kids are at your house. Chances are, they will feel more comfortable with such an open-ended invitation, and will not be likely to drop in on you too often.

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is mostly associated with children, and a lot of the time, many adults aren’t even diagnosed with it. However, ADHD does affect many adults – even some who did not have the disorder when they were kids. When a child has ADHD, it is usually more socially acceptable for them to display the symptoms of the disorder, but as an adult, you probably feel as though you are acting immature and that your peers are looking down on you. However, you are entitled to all of the accommodations that are given to kids with ADHD, minus the accommodations that are naturally given to children, of course!

So how do you cope with ADHD as an adult? It is hard enough to live with the disorder at home, let alone at work, in your social life (if you’ve got time for one!) and with your family. However, there are a few things you can do to make your life a little bit easier, one step at a time. Unfortunately, there is no “magic pill” for ADHD, and no formula that will make the symptoms go away forever; you have to work hard to keep your ADHD in check, but it is possible!

One thing you can do to make your life easier is to make time for that morning cup of coffee every day. Studies show that caffeine is a great stimulant for the ADHD brain, and one cup in the morning along with another cup at 3pm will make a difference in your day.

Another tip is to keep a piece of paper and a pen or pencil in your pocket at all times. When you think of things you need to do later on, pull out that piece of paper and write it down immediately! You can also use this paper to write down things you tend to forget doing throughout the day, to remind you of what you need to do.

Perhaps the most important thing that you can do for yourself is to embrace who you are. You don’t need to hide your ADHD all the time or keep apologizing for it. Your ADHD contributes to the creative, spontaneous person that you are, and I would bet that many people in your life appreciate a lot of your qualities that would maybe not be there if it weren’t for your disorder. Make a list of the qualities you like about yourself and the things you think you need to work on. Chances are, a lot of the things that you like about yourself are there because of your ADHD.

Don’t forget that you have support out there. You have family, friends, ADHD support groups, and there are therapists who specialize in adult ADHD. As an adult with this disorder, you require a different kind of support system from kids with ADHD, and that support really is out there. Take advantage of it; don’t go another day without the support system you need!
