Long Hair – Tips for Proper Care

When you were a little girl, you probably watched princess movies and read fairytales, dreaming of the day when you too would be swept off your feet by prince charming. In all of tales, the heroine always had the most beautiful head of hair that usually fell well down below her knees. Of course, the princess’ hair was never tangled or dirty, but as you grew older, you quickly discovered that this wasn’t an accurate presentation of how it is to have really long hair. If you’re addicted to hair with serious length, but tired of the extra hassle involved, here are some tips for taking care of your long locks quickly and easily.

Long Hair – Tips for Proper CareNow, chances are that if you have a lot of hair, you probably think it’s necessary to subject it to a lot of washing. A girl’s got to be clean, right? Yes, hygiene is important and you have to wash your hair on a regular basis. But if you’ve got really long hair, experts say that you should avoid shampooing it every day if you don’t have to. You can “wash” your hair, by getting it wet and running a comb through it, but you don’t have to use shampoo every day. Conventional shampoos can dry out your hair and wash away the natural oils from the scalp that keep it protected and healthy.

Another thing that long hair wearers have to deal with is getting choked or smothered by their hair during the night. To reduce their chances of getting tangled up in their own hair while they sleep, many people bind their hair up in a tight elastic or bun while they sleep, but this can be damaging for the hair over a long period of time. Instead, brush your hair with a bristle brush every night before you get ready for bed, and braid it loosely to keep it out of your face.

If you’re the kind of girl that likes to engage in as little hair maintenance as possible, you probably thought that saying “I’m growing my hair out” excused you from making another appointment with your stylist. However, even long hair that’s being grown out has to be trimmed by a stylist every now and then to make sure that split ends aren’t forming. And, just like your front lawn, hair that is cut regularly grows faster and thicker than hair that’s allowed to do its own thing for years at a time.
