Organic Shampoos – Choosing Natural Hair Products

These days it seems like everywhere we turn, there are more reports telling us about the dangers of commercial pesticides and the prevalence of hazardous chemicals in every product and food that we consume. The same is true of cosmetic products like shampoos, lotions and make-up. Although these products are supposed to help us stay clean and healthy, we’re slowly realizing that the synthetic ingredients they contain are actually putting our health in danger. Just like you search for organic produce and grains when you’re in the grocery store, it’s important to search for organic shampoos and other hair care products when you’re in the beauty supply store.

Organic Shampoos – Choosing Natural Hair ProductsThe important thing to keep in mind if you’re interested in making the switch from conventional shampoos to their organic alternatives is that you’re probably going to have to change the places that you shop for your beauty products as well. Unfortunately, your average drug store or grocery store isn’t going to offer you any natural hair care products, and if they do, they’re going to be outrageously priced because they are basically specialty items. Start your search in local health food stores or national organic grocery chains like Vitamin Cottage or Whole Foods.

Something else you might not expect is that there are in fact organic shampoos and conditioners specially made for each different hair color and type. If you’re going to make the investment in a high quality shampoo, you might as well pick the one that is perfect for your hair. Evaluate the ingredient list carefully, as there are likely to be some brands that only include a few organic ingredients while others will include an entirely plant-based, organic ingredient list. No matter what, make sure that your product doesn’t include any synthetic fragrances, preservatives (like diazolidinyl urea), carcinogen precursors and artificial colors.

The great thing about these organic shampoos is that they’re not only going to deliver more vitamins and nutrients to your hair, they’re also going to give you a healthier scalp as well. The lack of artificial dyes and fragrances in these products will prevent your scalp from becoming irritated or dry, which, in turn, will prevent you from having dandruff and an itchy scalp. If you are very adventurous, you can also look online for instructions on how to make your own homemade hair care products, but these usually take time to perfect, and will usually not have as many nutrients as a store bought brand.
