Putting the “I” in “Team” – Get Involved in Team Sports

Visit any playground in the United States and you’ll see common threads in all of them. Children playing games, chasing each other across the yard, climbing all over the playground equipment: these are all typical playground sights. You are also bound to see kids playing team sports together. From kickball to dodgeball to baseball, kids are always eager to form teams and engage in competitive sports. It’s possible for adults to take a lesson from children in this regard. Team sports are great for fostering relationships, having fun and relaxing, and exercising. Just because you’re not a kid doesn’t mean that you can’t play team sports.

Putting the I in Team – Get Involved in Team SportsThe first step to getting involved in adult team sports is to decide what sort of sport you’d like to play. Pick-up basketball games are always going on at public basketball courts or at gyms. This is great aerobic exercise that also requires a lot of strength. In the spring and summer, many cities organize softball or baseball leagues. Friends can get together for a casual game of touch or flag football. Ultimate Frisbee is even becoming more popular and can be plain indoors and out. Just pick a sport that you like and get more information on how to join a team.

You may not even need to join a formal team. Pick-up games of all kinds of sports are common. Basketball is one of the more common, since the equipment required to play is minimal. All you need is a court, the right shoes, and a ball and you’re ready to play. But, if you like, you can also take a more formal approach to the game by organizing a league. Or you can join a league that’s already been formed. You’re sure to find plenty of information on joining local teams on the internet.

Team sports are a great way to maintain your fitness. Even on days without a game, you may be motivated to work out and train in order to improve your performance. Team sports and games inject a good amount of fun into fitness and make it enjoyable for people to engage in physical activity. And in addition to that, it gives you time to interact with people on a social level as well, so it’s a great way to make new friends and maintain existing friendships. As it turns out, we could learn a thing or two from going back to the playground.
