Remifemin – Does Remifemin Really Work?

Q & A
Health Q & A’s

Question: I am a currently going through menopause and because my symptoms are bad, I was considering taking a hormone replacement. I talked to my doctor and she said that with the history of breast cancer in my family, this was probably not a good idea. I’m confused though as she didn’t explain why it would be dangerous, or really give me any suitable alternatives. I saw a product in my drug store called Remifemin which states that it is ‘estrogen-free’. What does this mean and is this a meds I should use instead of HRT?

Remifemin

Answer: The reason doctors may not recommend taking HRT to someone with a history of breast cancer is because using such a meds has been shown to significantly increase the risk of developing this and other types of cancer. It should also not be taken by anyone with a history of heart and cardiovascular disease. The HRT actually replaces the decreased hormone Estrogen with a synthetic type, whereas natural products such as Remifemin use plant-based ingredients that have a similar hormone balancing effect.

The common symptoms of menopause, that include hot flashes, night sweats, irritability and weight gain for instance, are caused by a drop in hormone levels which in turn leads to a rise in luteinizing hormones. By mimicking the work of estrogens, natural products reduce the symptoms safely and should not cause any unpleasant side effects. In this product, the clinically-proven plant Black Cohosh is used, as well as Rhizome, both of which can be taken by anyone with a history of breast cancer.

By reducing the hot flashes and night sweats, menopausal women find that not only does their mood improve significantly but it makes the whole process of menopause, which can last up to six years, much easier to get thorugh.

Tips on Entering Smoothly into Menopause

  • Exercise regularly. It raises the metabolism, helps with depression and anxiety and controls weight. Any weight bearing exercise will help to maintain a healthy bone calcium content and reduce the risk of osteoporosis
  • Eat a diet that is rich in vegetables, fruits and essential fatty acids. Cold water fish, including salmon, mackerel, sardines, tuna and herring, are all good sources. Essential fatty acids help to support the nervous system which may be important for memory and brain function. Additionally they act as anti-inflammatories and maintain healthy skin. Try to include soy in the diet too as it supports estrogen regulation in the system.
  • Nuts and seeds should be added to the diet as a good source of fiber, protein and fatty acids. Flax seeds in particular are an important source of healthy anti-inflammatory fats that also regulate estrogen
  • Avoid high levels of sugar, alcohol, caffeine and over-processed foods. Quitting smoking will help reduce hot flashes and night sweats
  • Balance in the body helps to keep it healthy. Make sure to nurture your mind to keep it quick, your body to maintain physical well-being and your spiritual and emotional life to remain positive and healthy
