Scheduling Your Time for an Effective Life

Managing Your Time to Get the Job Done

It doesn’t matter if you are a CEO or a stay-at-home mom, in today’s society there is always too much to do and not enough time to get it done. Life seems to be moving at a faster pace than ever before and time management is more important than ever. As children, we were taught to manage our time between homework, sports, and a social life. Now, as adults, our lives are pulled in infinite directions with endless responsibility. Sometimes it can feel too overwhelming to even know where to start. However, managing your time is easier than it seems, even if you have what seems like and endless to-do list. With a few simple steps to incorporate into your routine, everyday can feel manageable and no task will seem overwhelming.

Scheduling Your Time for an Effective LifeThe first step to conquering a mountain of tasks and responsibilities is to make a list. This may seem too simple to be relevant, but writing down what needs to be completed each day will help you reach your daily goals. Keep a pad of paper next to your bed since we often remember new tasks in the middle of the night and stress that we will forget by morning. Have a “master list” each day that can be added to and edited as the day changes.

Besides having a daily list of activities and responsibilities, you should manage your time by setting priorities. Firstly, you need to figure out what part of your life is highest on the priority list. It could be work, children, or family and friends but you need to firmly set one as the most important aspect of your life and the one that will come before all other parts. For instance, if you choose work as your number one priority, all work tasks should be given precedent on the day’s list of activities. This will help you feel comfortable in making decisions of what to focus on each day.

No matter how long your daily list may be, it is extremely important to find time for a break. It may sound crazy or selfish to schedule in time for yourself when the needs of others are endless, but running on an empty battery will only make you rundown and less effective. Try to find at least half an hour everyday to do something that you find enjoyable. Make time for reading, some exercise, or a hobby. This small amount of “me time” will help you recharge your battery so you are fresh and ready for the rest of your day.

Lastly, so many people believe that they are alone in the endless sea of tasks to accomplish and responsibilities to attend to. However, asking for help is essential to effective time management. If you have too many things to handle at work, delegate some of your work to others who have more time or who can help you out. If your family responsibilities are endless and overwhelming turn to help from older children, your spouse, or a parent or neighbor. More often than not, people can identify with your stress and are willing to help. Just be sure to remember to return the favor next time your co-worker is about to pull her hair out.
