Sixty Minutes a Day – New Study Shows That Women Need Sixty Minutes of Exercise Daily

Ladies, strap on your sneakers and pick up those weights. And make sure to plan enough time to get in at least an hour of exercise every day because that’s what you’re going to need. A new study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association has found that, as women get older, they need more exercise than previously thought in order to maintain their weight. The medical community used to think that thirty minutes of moderate activity every day was enough to stay fit; now, they’ve found that women need twice that amount in order to maintain their current weight.

The study also found that thirty minutes of vigorous activity is equivalent to sixty minutes of moderate activity. But do keep in mind that these guidelines only apply to women who want to maintain their current weight. If you want to lose weight, then you will have to exert yourself beyond these guidelines. It may be tempting to despair at this news, but take heart: changes in diet can also help you to get the weight loss you desire and, combined with a good exercise regimen, you’ll gradually get to a healthy weight.

Some of you may be wondering what constitutes moderate activity and what constitutes vigorous activity. The good news is that you don’t need to join a gym in order to get the exercise you need in order to stay healthy. Moderate activity could be anything from walking to bicycling to swimming at a relatively easy pace. Vigorous activity can be achieved by simply increasing your pace in these activities or even by adding weights as you practice them. And team sports are always a fun way to get in the required activity. You can play at a pace you’re comfortable with or really go at it if you want a challenge.

You can even get good exercise by engaging in certain household chores or even in social activities. Washing and waxing your car is good for sixty minutes of moderate exercise. Washing your floors is the same. Shoveling snow in the winter and gardening in the spring and summer make for great exercise, too. You can go out dancing for some good, vigorous activity, or perhaps plan a biking trip with your friends or family. There are plenty of options for you to exercise regularly and stay healthy as a result.
