Why Leading a Sedentary Lifestyle is Bad for You

Living a sedentary lifestyle can bring down one’s general health. Just take a look at the statistics about people who have died from heart ailments and diseases like diabetes, hypertension and even cancer. You will see that most of the victims have been living lazy inactive lives. Well, it really pays to have increased levels of physical activity. But in today’s world, that can be a lot easier to say than to do. All the advancements in technology that everyone on the planet is enjoying right now have become counterproductive when it comes to health issues. More and more people today enjoy being couch potatoes and become practically motionless.

Why Leading a Sedentary Lifestyle is Bad for YouTo make things worse, adults are not the only ones to suffer the effects of a sedentary lifestyle. Today, experts on general health say that even kids are prone to diseases that, just a couple of decades ago, are threatening only adults and older people. For instance, there are now cases where teenagers have had coronary bypass surgeries. Acquired diabetes among teenagers has also become rampant. Experts have pointed out that the main reason why even younger individuals can suffer from heart diseases and diabetes is the fact that most kids today prefer to sit and spend hours playing video games or watching television, add to that all the junk food that has become a regular fare among many households.

Truly, when it comes to one’s general health, having a sedentary lifestyle can be bad. With less physical activity, the body tends to burn less calories and fat. This can lead to obesity which is known to cause all sorts of diseases from high blood pressure to colon cancer. Also, when a person does not have enough exercise, the part of the DNA structure known as telomeres can become damaged. Damaged telomeres have been known to speed up the aging process. But the most common health problem that can be directly linked to living a sedentary lifestyle is the formation of fat deposits that can obstruct blood circulation in the arteries.

So, to make sure that your general health is not at risk, you have to adopt a more active lifestyle. At first, defeating a sedentary lifestyle can be difficult. But once you put your mind to it, you will see that success and a healthier life is always possible. Make it a point to eat a healthy diet and do regular exercise. Do things that will prevent you and your kids from falling into a sedentary lifestyle.
